R. W. Connell’s article “Why is classical Theory Classical?” contends that the discipline of Sociology emerged from a broad cultural dynamic in which the tensions of liberalism and empire were central, and that global expansion and European imperialism gave the discipline its main conceptual framework and much of its data, key problems, and methods.
Using applicable examples, and scholarship on decoloniality critically discuss the criticism of the sociological canon as presented in Connell’ paper.

Your paper can be typed in Times New Roman or Arial font, size 12pt. using a computer/mobile device OR handwritten very neatly. The paper should about 1000-1500 words (about 4 pages max). The paper is to be submitted only on eFundi.

2 Discussion on the sociology canon:
Student has/shows a good understanding of the history sociology of sociology;
Understands how the canon was developed, and the problems it solved for the discipline, in other words best explains the ‘why’ aspect of the need to have a sociological canon;
Has knowledge/awareness of key issues, methods and problems that the ‘classical’ canon sought to address 10
3 Discussion on the limitations of the canon:
Shows critical comprehension of the artificiality or Euro-centeredness of the sociological canon, and demonstrates knowledge of the impact of such limitations/shortcomings 10
4 Critical evaluation of the sociological canon:
Student produces a compelling overarching argument, and uses applicable examples to show the need to abandon the internalist history of sociology and call for an inclusive redefined global sociological canon
Provides arguments in favour of a revised history of the discipline which includes all the marginalised scholars
Provides a compelling discussion on the need to provide a sociological narrative that incorporates both European and Southern/ Subaltern views 15
