1. Research topic Statement
Students are required to identify a research topic and to provide a brief explanation of why this topic was chosen.
This section should be approximately four sentences in length. For the sake of precision and clarity, your research topic should be no more than two sentence long. The explanation of why the topic was chosen should be approximately two sentences. In total, this section (including the research topic and the rationale for why the topic was selected) should be no more than 100 words.
The research topic should be a precise formulation of the focus of the proposed research. The research topic, as Dizzy (2013) explains, “should be clear enough to specify exactly what you want to research” (p. 54).

2. Annotated bibliography
This section of the assessment requires students to contextualize their research within the broader academic literature by completing an annotated bibliography.
The function of an annotated bibliography is to provide a brief account of the available literature on your research topic. As well as describing the information provided in the source, you are required to critically evaluate it in terms of its relevance to your own research and how it will be used to inform your research.
You are required to annotate six academic sources (e.g. journal articles, academic books, chapters from scholarly books) applicable to your research topic. Each annotation should be approximately 200 words in length.

Each entry in an annotated bibliography must include the bibliographic details of the source (i.e. the citation of the source that is being annotated) followed by a brief annotation of the source. Annotations must be written in paragraph form – do not use dot points!
Each annotation should describe the main argument of the source, what methodology the source has drawn upon, and how the source is relevant to your own research.

When annotating each of your sources, consider the following questions:
• What is the source about?
• What research methods are being used?
• How are the methods justified in terms of the methodology?
• What theoretical framework is being drawn on?
• What are the main findings?
• What are the strengths and limitations of the study?
• How useful is this source in terms of your own research?
