THE TASK: Draw from the Core Readings we’ve engaged with so far in this class to address one of the following (related) questions: i) Who is public space for? ii) What factors limit the publicness of public space?

This short essay is a literature review that steers toward an analysis of the big issue in which we’ve rooted our study of university writing techniques: think of this paper as hosting a conversation about the competing uses of public space. This will play two ways: you will need to let your analysis of the big issue be guided by the Core Readings you engage—and yet, you will also need to steer your summaries toward the big issue as you frame it.

PARAGRAPH 1: Begin with a shortened, revised, and re-focused version of your Objective Summary of either Rebecca Solnit’s “Tracing a Headland” or Jeffery Hou’s “(Not) Your Everyday Public Space”— whichever you wrote about in your Objective Summary. You are repurposing your first assignment to function as an introduction to how public space shapes—and is shaped by—the social. Be sure that you’ve integrated my feedback from your Objective Summary assignment into your revised introductory paragraph. Note that you will need to further condense your summary for use in this Analysis Essay: this paragraph should be no more than 250 words—and it must also function to introduce your overarching response to the central essay question (see your two options listed above). This will mean that you only have about 150 words (on the upper end) for your condensed summary. You will need to use the remainder of the space in this intro paragraph to set up your argument.

PARAGRAPH 2: Start with a topic sentence that both links to your overarching argument and sets up a summary of Nicholas Blomley’s chapter, “Pedestrianism” (Core Reading #4). Summarize how Blomley describes the relationship between urban space management and social justice issues in “Pedestrianism,” and then either: draw from Ellie Cosgrave’s TED Talk to offer further context to the limitations of urban design; or draw from Low & Smart’s article (Core Reading #1) to think through how our relationships to public spaces like sidewalks have shifted in the context of the pandemic. Be sure to steer your summary toward your larger argument with a concluding sentence that ties back to your own analysis and transitions to the next paragraph.
