Amira was born in Sudan, experienced the war which claimed the life of her biological father. She spent some months in a refugee camp with her mother and siblings before migrating to Australia. 

– Amira has major trauma issues and behaviours, such as being highly anxious while at school. Amira is smart but finds it challenging to engage with her peers. She struggles with accepting new people, including teacher and carers. Amira engages in a physical altercation when she feels threatened. She talks a lot about death, bombs, fatal accidents, and fires. Amira does not have a positive relationship with her family.

– Amira’s mother has mental health and drug use issues, alongside traumatic past. She finds it hard bonding with Amira. She complained of not being able to ‘tame’ her daughter behaviours of concern. She had neglected Amira’s care and child protection got involved. Amira has been OoHC since 2014.

– Amira lived in kinship care with her grandmother until she was too old to care for her. Amira lived with foster carers; but because of her aggression towards people and animals, she was placed in residential care. 

Amira Omer, a 16-year-old female was, dressed suitably for the weather; however, with seemingly poor personal hygiene. She and clothing were unkempt and dishevelled. She looked older and bigger than her stated age. Maintained poor eye contact but was easy to engage and cooperative during our meeting. Amira was easily distracted during the conversation. She rated her mood as a “3” on a 1-10 scale, with one being the saddest she has ever been and ten being as happy as possible. She further volunteered that the last time she was happy was at Christmas as she loved the warm weather and the foods. She voiced increased daytime sleepiness and tiredness at night.  Her affect was flat but reactive and appropriate to the discussions. Her speech was coherent and clear, and of slow rate, but with normal tone and volume. She said she is anxious about crowds because they were targets for bomb attacks back at home. Amira has no delusional thoughts or thoughts of self-harm. She does not present with any hallucinations. She expresses themes of guilt because she got pregnant out of wedlock, which is shameful in her religion and culture. Her cognitive skills, including attention and memory, were intact. She was fully alert and oriented to time, place, and person. Her answers to questions relating to social justice were constructive and well-developed. Her insight into her mental health condition and pregnancy is age appropriate. But her judgement regarding treatments is poor. She has been non-compliant with medications and attending CBT.

Amira has been exposed to a traumatic past and bullying at school due to her skin colour and accent. She has grown up learning to defend herself and having behaviours of concerns.
