  • This project intends to have students explore the operations function of an existing service organization of their choosing.
  • The project involves the development of a comprehensive report (20-page).
  • Guidelines for Final Report Preparation:
  • General Format
  • The report must be formatted as instructed and is expected to represent 20 pages.
  • Use 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins.
  • Use APA in-sentence citation style include a Bibliography, and adhere to corporate websites, accepted peer-reviewed journal articles, and mainstream media articles as accepted sources. Wikipedia and blogs should never be used as references for this type of report.
  • Use subheadings within the report when appropriate.
  • A table of contents page is required.
  • Plan the report carefully to develop an organized and non-redundant report.
  • Content Requirements:
  • Document current operations using the ten Operations Management Strategies as a guide. This analysis is expected to be extremely detailed. Using flowcharts, job analyses, job descriptions, verbal explanations, or similar methods, explain the operations activities and technology for the firm. Specifically, the various inputs, transformation processes, and several outputs must be identified. Carefully and in-depth, describe how the OM activities are performed in the firm. The expectation is that this will not represent a high-level analysis that could be a representation of any firm, rather that it will be a unique analysis of the firm you are focusing on.
  • The Ten Operations Management Strategies are: Design of Goods and Services, Managing Quality, Process Strategy, Location Strategy, Layout Strategy, Human Resources, Supply-Chain Management, Inventory Management, Scheduling, and Maintenance.
  • Identify a problem. For at least two of the activities (or an additional operational activity) discussed above, identify an operating problem (not a marketing or financial problem) or opportunity in the firm. This might represent an actual issue or opportunity that the firm is facing or one that you have identified in your analysis. Document this problem or opportunity. Describe the problem as is currently understood; attach any literature or documentation of the problem.
  • Propose a solution. Suggest one or more tentative solutions to the problem. Provide a detailed explanation so that a reader will gain a basic understanding of what is proposed . When identifying a problem, be specific, and make sure the problem relates to the activities that you are to study. Further, when developing a solution(s), do not be open-ended. If you are recommending changes in the current method(s), you need to estimate the costs, if any, of such changes, and trade-offs in terms of how they currently approach this problem. As before, be thorough about solutions that are proposed; that is, make sure that you consider all aspects of the problem.
  • Components of the Report (outline): YOU ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW THIS EXACTLY AS PRESENTED HERE
  • Executive abstract. The report must begin with a one- to two-page abstract that orients the reader as to the contents as well as to the major sections of the report. The abstract, by itself, must provide enough information about the project so that the reader can judge simply by reading this portion if he or she wants to read further.
  • Introduction. This first segment should present a brief history of the organization and its local operations. Be brief and succinct, but make sure that the reader can obtain a complete perspective of the organization leading to the balance of your report. One page (maximum) is appropriate for this section.
  • Environmental background. In this section, discuss the following two aspects. First, outline the nature of the organization’s external environment (what the firm does not control – from the industry’s perspective), examining the critical factors that may influence operational policies as well as overall operations strategy. Second, examine the firm’s internal environment (what the firm does control). This involves consideration of customers, suppliers, distributors, and competitors that comprise the industry. You may want to use several tools (for example, SWOT for internal, PEST for external, etc.) in this analysis, but always include a written, textual explanation. Draw overall conclusions based on what the internal and external analyses might suggest as well. A two to a three-page minimum is appropriate for this section.
  • Organizational analysis. This part of the report should focus on the operations management analysis outlined in the description of the term project. This represents the “current state”. Be very specific when writing this section. Do not make open-ended statements. Be as detailed as described above. Each of the ten operational strategies should approximate one or more pages in length.
  • Problem identification and solution. Remember, you are a consultant charged with developing potential recommendations as a solution. This would require a very detailed analysis, not one that offers a high-level suggestion. When identifying a problem, be specific, and make sure the problem relates to the activities that you are to study. Further, when developing a solution(s), do not be open-ended. If you are recommending changes in the current method(s), you need to estimate the costs, if any, of such changes. The cost can be expressed as capital investment, and/or as human resources. Be thorough about solutions that are proposed; that is, make sure that you consider all aspects of the problem. Examine and detail all “pros” and “cons” in advance of making your final recommendation, so the context of your consideration process is clear. The length of this section will vary by group, but you should consider a minimum of three pages for this section as appropriate.
  • Summary. In one to two pages, you must summarize your project, including what you did, how you did it, the major problems, and the solutions proposed.
  • Exhibits, tables, and figures. All calculations, figures, and other graphical or numerical information should be summarized in this section (or embedded within the textual portion of the report).
  • Bibliography and Citations. The listing of all of the references used in your analysis must be presented in APA format. All appropriate information and data presented in your report must be properly and appropriately cited using in-sentence citations in APA style. Appropriate attribution, whether it is the company’s corporate website, a journal article, or media source, is a critical component of this assignment. The entire team is responsible for all sections submitted in this report – please make certain you meet this requirement prior to submission.
  • Citation: In-text and end-references only (APA STYLE)
