The choice of the UK as country to study for this research has important reasons. First of all, the UK was one of the first countries to address the threats posed by rapid climate change that included environmental, economic and security threats (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy 2019a). The use of renewable energy is an important way in which the UK can meet the emissions targets and greenhouse gas reduction targets to which it has made legal binding commitments. The present government has also made a commitment to the investment of an extra £440 million in supporting the smart network and lower the price of renewables to encourage the private sector to adopt them (Raybould et al., 2020). Therefore, the UK’s economy has grown by two thirds and its carbon emissions have been reduced by 40% since year 1990 (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy 2019a). Moreover, an estimation of the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the UK greenhouse between 1990 and 2016, suggest that the decrease is in the region of 800 to 470 MtCO2e (Raybould et al., 2020). Moreover, The UK’s efforts for reduction of carbon emission and focus upon increasing renewable energy sources for power production have led to 364.1 million tonnes carbon emission in year 2018 that was 2.5% lower than the carbon emission of year 2017. This has been achieved through reduction in usage of coal for power general and increasing reliance upon renewable energy sources (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy 2019a).
