The government on both sides of politics are considering changes to the Industrial Relations laws. These will have hugs impacts on individuals and business alike. The biggest change suggested in the white paper is the change to the laws governing the casualisation of the workforce. Casuals are disadvantaged in the workforce in some ways; however the advantages of choice of working hours and flexibility are needed by so many. Most students attending study use casualised work to suit their study needs and ensure income during this period.
Wages for employees is by far the greatest fixed expense a business has.
You will in this assessment investigate the Industrial Relations changes as related to casual workers and apply them to the scenario provided.
Consider the pros and cons from an HR, Management and Accounting perspective. Critically analyse the changes for a report to the managers on how this affects ABC Pty Ltd and what the impact will be for the sustainability of the organisation. How will this affect planning for example? What is the impact on HR going forward? Consideration of the dignity and diversity of individual workers must be paramount in your discussion.
Your investigative report calls for impartial, apolitical and decisions in the best interests of the organisation and casual workers. 1500-word report which will provide clear understanding for HRM staff of the government policy. The Scenario
Details of ABC Pty Ltd:
Operates as a coffeeshop.
20 staff rotate 6-hour casual shifts.
Two staff are on each shift with the manager.
None are permanent, however. –
Three have fixed part time hours of 6 hours.
The café is only open Monday to Friday in the city. Operating from 7 am to 7 pm.
The café is family run with three family members sharing the managerial role. They are not to be considered in the assessment.
