Task 1 – The Art of Persuasion

            Strong thesis statements carry a set of qualities. For instance, the statements must have specificity, precision, ability to facilitate an argument, forcefulness, confidence, and ability for demonstration. In this lesson, having watched videos about the thesis statements, and the Aristotelian emotional appeals of logos, pathos, and ethos, the three thesis statements formulated from the lesson have one or more of these attributes.

           A close examination of the three thesis statements shows that they are forceful, but are not as concise. Abdulai and Owusu-Ansah (2014) argues that a forceful thesis statement demonstrates to the readers that one is making a study argument, and is accompanied by an assertive tone. Such statements also take a stance likely to be opposed by others (Sebele-Mpofu & Serpa, 2020). However, since the thesis statements are not as concise, it means they lack specificity. This means they do not focus on or concentrate on a single area of a general research topic.

Notably, the three statements were written in confidence, which means they take an authoritative stand on the specific matter of focus. Saeed et al. (2019) argue that the confidence of thesis statements is meant to trigger some sense of faith and belief among the readers, and encourage open-mindedness. Therefore, having considered the above factors, the following are the three thesis statements:

• Learning institutions should provide educational materials for low-income students during summer holidays to enhance their education prospects throughout the academic year.
• Cyberbullying increases stress levels among teens with social media accounts and smartphones and can cause anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
• Medicinal marijuana should be legalized as research shows using it is helpful for army veterans with PTSD.
