One crazy law is Virginia Code under section 29.1-521. The law states that it is illegal to hunt or kill animals, even nuisance ones, even those roaming on private lands on Sundays. The law emphasizes that Sundays are rest days for every species of wild animals and birds, except raccoons (Dead, 2019). What is crazier is that raccoons can only be until 2:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. For decades, hunting on Sunday in Virginia has been an issue, the Virginia House Delegate admitted in 2015 (LIS, 2021). The controversy surrounding the law, however, has not been looked at by the subcommittee. Notably, Virginia’s Department of Game and Inland Fisheries endorsed Sunday afternoon hunting in 2011, but the recommendations did no go past the subcommittee level. I support the Virginia law. Although it has been lifted, the law was crucial on animal cruelty grounds. One of the reasons for my support for the law is that it provided the needed security for hikers on Sundays (Dead, 2019). Virginia hiking enthusiasts hiking in forested areas in Virginia such as Big Woods, Browne State Forest, Charlotte State Forest, and Chilton Woods, among others, do not have to worry about being shot at by hunters. At the same time, it protects farmers and the Farm Bureau since a lot of hunting also takes place on private property (COPS, 2013). Therefore, they do not mind keeping away bullets away from these private lands at least one day a week. Additionally, the support aligns with religious doctrines as explored and supported by the 4th Amendment. Of importance, however, is security for hikers on Sundays.
