Assignment Task:

Purpose

A student undertaking a Minor Thesis is completing NURS 5003 and NURS 5004: courses within a course work masters. Students are not undertaking a research degree which include PhDs, Masters by Research and Professional Doctorates by research (research degrees). These research degrees are granted on the basis that the research makes ‘an original contribution to knowledge’. Students completing a Minor Thesis in a course work Masters degree are required to demonstrate understanding of the research process. Making ‘an original contribution to knowledge’ is not a requirement to achieve a pass.  Completing NURS 5003 and NURS 5004 within the study period enrolled as a student is a requirement. 

First and foremost then, the research proposal process is designed to ensure that the proposed research will fulfil the expected requirements of the course and at the same time also serves to ensure that research is conducted in an efficient manner, and does not waste resources. The research proposal is used to:

•   generate useful feedback before the research commences (Minor Thesis B) thereby avoiding problems and delays down the track;
•   ensure that you and your supervisors are clear about the proposed research;
•   determine that the research can be completed within the given time frame (must complete in the study period the student is enrolled) and resource limitations;

Given that students in Minor Thesis A & B undertake these courses within a coursework degree, students and supervisors are strongly encouraged not to undertake research which involves human participants that involves applying for ethics clearance from the university and potentially external venues.

Structure of the research proposal

The content and structure of the research proposal is designed to answer the key questions of examiners:

•  What problem, issue or concern does the research address?
•  How will the research contribute to existing knowledge?
• How will the research achieve its stated objectives?
• Is the research do-able within the given time and resource constraints?
• Are there any special considerations that affect the feasibility of the research?

Good research proposals address these questions by showing that the research:

• addresses a problem, issue, concern or conundrum;
• provides new knowledge that will contribute to addressing this;
•  makes clear the methods and methodology appropriate to address the research question;
• can be successfully completed within the given time, resource and other constraints.
