Why is Critical Thinking Important?

When you honestly assess and acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses using critical thinking skills you are forming the foundation needed for mastering learning in any environment or situation. Learning to critically assess learning styles and understanding how one learns and interacts with learning will help students become better learners (master students). This is an essential skill needed for academic success, postgraduate studies, and professional careers. Students who have strong critical thinking skills are successful for several reasons, including that they are able to assess and improve on weaknesses; capitalize on their strengths; successfully communicate with fellow students, faculty, and employers; and are more prepared for lectures, tests, and assignments. These students experience less anxiety and stress, and are more confident, thereby positively impacting their academic success and grades. The concept of critical thinking will also be a part of most college/university courses—test preparation, essays, and assignments are skills that will continue to be needed and built upon throughout their academic courses. 
Critical thinking also leads to creativity and invention. If you can solve a problem by using or acquiring knowledge and by adapting that knowledge to the problem, you are using critical thinking skills in a creative manner!
Without critical thinking you won’t succeed.

What’s a Taxonomy?
A taxonomy is a classification system for living and non-living things. In our case, we’re looking at knowledge and learning.

Bloom’s Taxonomy
Benjamin Bloom and some colleagues (1956) created categories of educational goals. It is used by teachers to help them organize their teaching and to identify the level to which students need to learn “course material” or demonstrate their knowledge. Later, in 2001, another group of psychologists, educators and researchers modified this “taxonomy” to be more descriptive of the actions involved in demonstrating learning. We’re using it in this course to show the different levels of knowledge YOU need to demonstrate and where critical thinking fits in.
