Assignment Task
Task
The purpose of this assignment is: (1) Conduct a thorough self-analysis of your strengths and weaknesses with respect to managerial skills. (2) Develop strategies that you can work on during your program to help you develop some of those skills critical for your future career. For this assignment you should apply relevant assessments and articles from the subject to conduct a thorough self-analysis which results in the selection of 3-5 skills to work on for development purposes. You should then develop a strategy for development of each of these skills. Both your analysis and strategies should be based on objective sources and analysis rather than simply your own opinions. The document should be written in a clear and well organised style. Be sure to review and proofread your Self Development Plan to eliminate any grammatical, spelling, punctuation, and other errors. The Plan should be typed, double-space, in a 12 point Times New Roman font to facilitate readability and feedback. There is no word limit for the plan, but good managers should be able to articulate their thoughts concisely and accurately. The rubric below should provide sufficient guidance to complete the plan, in addition to the workshop we will complete in class. Of course you should feel free to talk to me at any time if you have questions.
Criteria & Weight Excellent – Very Good (10 – 7.5) Good – Competent (7 – 5) Needs development (< 5) Grade
Rationale
40% Draws on a large variety of objective sources to identify gaps in skills necessary for future career development.
Identifies similarities and contrasts in assessment results to provide a more detailed and insightful analysis.
Demonstrates consideration of a variety of relevant perspectives in analysis by integrating and synthesising perspectives from both assessments and skill development literature.
Articulates a compelling, coherent and well-structured argument for the selection of several skills or strengths for future development.
Adequately summarizes some of the covered knowledge and assessments but appears to be missing important elements necessary for a detailed self-analysis. The writer provides too much superfluous detail.
Applies relevant concepts and theories to conduct a self-analysis, but application suggests minor misunderstanding of some concepts (e.g., some definitions are misstated, vague, or omit key elements). The analysis could be more thorough; one or more relevant or key sources have not been used.
Self-analysis involves some integration of these perspectives (articles and assessments) to provide a more in depth analysis.
Presents a structured argument for selection of skills or strengths that could be more thorough (e.g., one or more relevant perspectives appear to be omitted).
Rationale is largely a collection of previously held beliefs rather than based on a variety of objective sources.
Insufficient use of information on yourself and your intended occupation and its demands? (making sense of the MLCQ spreadsheet, bringing to bear information on your occupation, using other relevant information (e.g. other class surveys, articles, feedback, or prior experience) to inform choices)
Mentions, lists and describes, but does not analyse or integrate concepts, articles and assessments to present a holistic and in depth self-analysis.
The argument for overall selection of the chosen skills is either weak or poorly constructed and/or does not lead the reader logically to their selection.
Development Plan
40% The strategies for development of each skill are creative, specific to the skill identified and sufficiently detailed to indicate how they will be implemented.
The plans indicate a thorough understanding of the skill development process and use of sources to inform skill development strategies and actions.
There is a specific plan for each area of skill development.
The plans are more concrete and specific and likely to be feasible in the time period.
The plans indicate a degree of through and creativity.
Evidence of knowledge of the skill development process and strategies required for development of specific skills. The plans for each skill is vague, superficial, or supporting logic is significantly flawed or absent.
The plans are not concrete, specific or creative.
The plans are not likely to be feasible in the given time period.
The plans do not reflect knowledge of the managerial skill development process from the readings, lecture or elsewhere. Writing Mechanics
