Context: 

This case study is to help you engage with two different counselling theories. By applying the knowledge you have gained from the course to a specific case, you will deepen your understanding of the application of the major counselling models. 

Instructions: 

Rosa, a 25-year-old woman asks for advice on which type of counselling would help her move forward in her life after a relationship break up. You cannot counsel her yourself because she is a friend’s sister. You know that she dropped out of a nursing course to follow her boyfriend to Perth where she lived with him for two years. When they broke up she returned to her parents’ home in Sydney. She is not currently employed and she does not know what she wants to do. 

Discuss how two different counselling methods would help her address this problem and decide on what advice would be appropriate. 

This case study should begin with an introduction to the two chosen methods. The bulk of the case study will discuss how counsellors using each method would work with the client in question. 

The essay needs to cover the following 

• Why does Rosa need counselling when her parents and her sister could easily give her advice on what to do? 

• What might be the barriers to engagement in counselling? Why might she find it difficult to tell her story? 

• What factors need to be taken into consideration in choosing a counselling method for Rosa? 

• What are the strengths and weaknesses of each of the two methods in addressing Rosa’s problems? 

• Are there counselling methods which would be unsuitable for Rosa? Why? 

• What sorts of problems is each method most helpful in addressing? What are the relevant features of the method? 

• What are the ethical issues in advising Rosa on which type of therapy would suit her? E.g. could you refer her to a friend you know to be a good counsellor? Could you refer her to your supervisor? Are you influenced by the personality of the counsellor or the application of the therapy?
