Assignment Task
Another interesting take
Recommendations: five main areas in this order (and don’t forget to look upwards from time to time as well as some art is up high!):
i. Hosier and Rutledge Lanes
ii. Flinders Lane – (turn right from Hosier Lane and cross Russell St) – there are a number of laneways running off Flinders Lane between Russell and Exhibition Streets – check out each of these including Oliver; ACDC Lane, (Duckboard Place) which is a U shaped lane which will take you back up to flinders Lane.
iii. Between Russell and Spring Streets, and Little Collins and Little Bourke streets (see especially Meyers Place and Corrs Lane).
iv. Stevenson Lane and others between Swanston and Russell streets, and Lonsdale and Little Bourke streets.
v. Union lane (between Bourke and Little Collins streets): this is a hot spot for graffiti art – we recommend you finish your tour here in the centre of the CBD.
2. Dining and shopping lanes: Degraves St to Lonsdale St (between Queen and Swanston streets)
For this trip you can follow the city of Melbourne recommended walk as a rough guide but also check out other lanes they do not cover in your area and ask yourselves why they were left out of the tour!
3. ‘Cosmopolitan Melbourne’ and ‘Ethnic Enclave tourism’: this tour focusses on Chinatown but also on the history of the city and the way in which cultural tourism tries to make capital out of this ‘marvellous melbourne’ heritage and images of cosmopolitanism (which is?) from Elizabeth to Spring streets and bounded by Lonsdale and Collins streets.
4. ‘Waterfront Melbourne’: reinvention of Yarra River
Thirty years ago, the river was a toxic soup and the south side of the river a maze of warehouses and factories and used car saleyards. Since the state government and City of Melbourne cooperated to produce a master plan and coordinated strategy to re-orient the city to the waterways there has been a dramatic reinvention of the city. This walk takes you along both banks of the river between Princes Bridge and Kingsway. Look at the way the different parts of the riverscapes work (and don’t). Which parts are public and which parts reflect private interests and visions? The southgate shopping complex? The arts centre? The Casino? The corporate towers? The promenades. Don’t forget to look at the traffic on the river itself. You will be using the walkways across the main commuting time – who are the actors on and users of the walkways and cycle paths?
THEMES
Remember these are themes we want you to reflect on in your field work report journal:
1. Movement and the Lived City – How do the flows of people and information and the form of the city affect the lived experience of city life? What can be drawn from this in urbanised and suburban environments? How does the changing city form and functional location alter community identity at the human and city-wide scale? What difference do the street artists, graffitists, parkours, urbexers make to the lived city? Who else matter in the CBD and how and why? (e.g., Corporations, small businesses, residents, tourists, universities?)
2. Space, Place and the Layered City – How does the physical presence of diverse communities with diverse purpose in the city act to create different ‘places’ within one city? How is the changing social understanding of the use of space and the role of the public realm evident throughout Melbourne? Who are the key place makers in the city and the suburbs – are they different?
3. Community and Competing Representations – What is the nature of community identity and identities of communities in the city and the suburbs? How is this constructed at the personal, group and policy level? Does the physical form (e.g., density, layout) of the city/suburbs play a role in determining identity?
