Legal research requires students to independently undertake their own exploration for sources and to select matter intelligently. In particular, those sources should be used carefully and the reasons for their selection should appear in a cogent way. It is always apparent when scattergun or slavish accumulation of sources/references is undertaken by students.

4. However, the essay should also prosecute contentions on where the student stands on the question set, where the student’s stance is clearly informed by the reading of sources — whether those sources are explicitly referenced in the reading guide, the prescribed books or the question, or have been assimilated by independent student research. The question that has been specifically set requires specific engagement so that structure, reading, research and contentions must be directed to that question.
