Background – Through the course you have learned about a variety of infectious diseases, how they are transmitted and their impacts on human health. Some infections are common and don’t cause significant illness, others are rare with significant impact, and may lie along this spectrum. From a public health perspective it is important to consider the nature of an infection and its epidemiology to determine how to best identify and control outbreaks.

Task description
This assessment task incorporates learning from across the whole unit. Choose an infectious disease of interest to you that has recently (since 2010) resulted in an
outbreak. Write a structured report related to your disease of interest which includes the following three components:

1. Natural history of the disease
a. Causative agent
b. Transmission
c. Detection and Diagnosis
d. Disease outcomes

2. General epidemiology of the disease
a. Person/risk groups
b. Place
c. Time

3. Outbreak evaluation
Select an outbreak report that has been published since 1 January 2010. You must select a scientific report of an outbreak, not media advice or news story. Include a description of the outbreak and evaluation of:
a. Case definition
b. Descriptive epidemiology
c. Analytic epidemiology
d. Control measures
e. Conclusions
