Environment Impact Assessments (EIAs) are generally acknowledged as fundamental support tools for decision-making in pursuit of sustainable development in both the developed and developing world. However, concerns are raised about both the transparency of the EIA process and the understanding and related quality participation by interested and affected parties (I&APs). In particular, I&APs are often frustrated and barred from adequate participation by their lack of understanding of the EIA process, their ignorance of their legal rights and the legal obligations of developers, their inability to access relevant information and a cumulative uncoordinated and ineffective reactive approach to development planning.
