Unit Description
Welcome to HI6027 Business and Corporate Law. In this unit, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of the Australian legal system, contract and tort law, as well as company law. This unit will also help students enhance their understanding of how company law influences practices and policies of business organisations.
It will provide students with solid foundation knowledge of the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth) which is vital to understanding how companies operate in Australia. This unit looks at the various players involved – e.g. members, directors, creditors, regulators and the public. An understanding of company law is essential for students who are aspiring to be senior managers in a company.
This unit is accredited by Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand and CPA Australia for covering the core areas of competencies for professional accountants. 

Unit Learning Outcomes
On completion of this unit students will be able to:
1. Critically analyse the main features of the Australian Legal System and the foundations of company law.
2. Critically analyse the basic principles of Contract, Tort, and privacy law and apply them in resolving legal issues arising in commercial transactions.
3. Appraise and evaluate the application of Consumer Law principles in articulating the legal rights, duties and responsibilities of parties.
4. Research and advocate the appropriateness of the different types of business structures and the legal environment in which they operate and their advantages and disadvantages in various commercial contexts.
5. Examine and analyse the role and obligations of company directors in an ethical and sustainable business environment.
