Reflective practice is a core concept in social work and probably the most well-known theoretical perspective across the entire applied professions of health and social care. Heron (2005) explains that a reflection on the privileges associated with social work location can help reflect on the importance of anti-oppressive practice. With these in mind, it is imperative for social workers to continually reflect on values and ethics as well as being aware of the influence the social worker has on client and their families while working with them. Ruch (2000) describes reflection has a main pathway for learning, therefore, critical reflections are needed by social work students to questions their practice and to bring about good practice.  

In this essay, I will be reflecting and critically analysing my experience on placement by focusing on a specific case study and discussing different literature that has informed my practice. I will begin by providing a brief overview of the placement setting as well as the council strength-based model of analysis applied by the organisation while working with adult social care. I will draw on an example from my work with a client who is diagnosed with unspecified dementia. I also will be evaluating theories applied while working with the client and family as well as law principles that guide professionals working with the client. This will be done by highlighting my undertaking of the Care Act (2014) assessment and ensuring work is done in an anti-oppressive manner.  I will also be applying Gibb’s (1988) reflective model which applies the cyclical approach to reflection. I will be providing a summary of the case study including the historical of his life, Finally, I will critically analyse and reflect on work done with the client, the impact it has had on me as well as helped me identify future learning needs as I go into my practice as a social worker.
