Organisational History

The company was originally started by four University friends soon after their graduation. The initial enthusiasm and excitement of the first years of operation were driven by their diverse backgrounds and complementary skills sets.

The company is doing well, with significant early years success. The company quickly gained interest in the marketplace and their produce range was received well with customers. Wirkkala has recently engendered much interest from potential investors too. However, meetings to determine expansion plans necessary to move the company to the next stage in their development as well as responses to the global COVID-19 pandemic have brought to the fore stark differences the following areas:

• Value bases,
• Priorities,
• Leadership styles,
• Attitudes towards data use,
• Aspirations and ideas for the direction of company, and
• Perceptions of the ‘new normal’ in a (post)COVID-19 world.

Information Systems 
There are currently three main information systems in use at Wirkkala, with only limited interoperability. 

Head Office maintain: 
The HR information system which contains information about current and previous employees (e.g. personal details, salary, training, attendance, and performance ratings). 
A database of distributors, suppliers (and members of the supply chain), and wholesalers 
Sales and accounting data 
Marketing and customer data. 

The factory maintains: 
Process, production and maintenance data 
Technical and operational data for machinery. 

The Warehouse maintains: 
Their own database of suppliers 
Distribution network control data (planning, scheduling tracking, etc.).
