Overview

In this assignment you will write an 800 word article, as if for an online business news site, describing the research study (Wellbeing at Work 2020) along with some of its findings and implications. Your report will highlight the importance of the issue and link our real research findings to practical workplace recommendations. 

Aims (of the broader research project) 

The broader project explores daily work demands (time pressure) and how they are appraised (as challenges and hindrances) affect work engagement (dedication and absorption) and work behaviour (proactivity and procrastination). However, your report will have a more specific aim involving a subset of these variables. 

Learning objectives 

Research undertaken by organisational psychologists is of little practical value if it is never communicated to business people, or if it is communicated in a way that is accessible only to scientists. This assignment is about describing (accurately) the results of a psychology research study in a manner that is accessible to, and useful for, a business audience. 

Learning objectives include development of: written communication skills, knowledge of some important topics in organisations (e.g., relations between work factors, stress processes, and wellbeing), recognition of the relevance of psychological theories and methods to real-world problems and issues in Australian workplaces, awareness of scientific methodologies used in organisational psychology research, and capability to interpret research findings and draw out their practical implications in the workplace. 

Structure

As you might expect, “business reports” (a term we’re using very loosely to refer to a description of research for a business audience) are written differently from scientific reports (i.e. descriptions of research written for a scientific audience). So one key difference is the audience: for this business report, we want you to practice writing about psychology research for an audience that may have limited knowledge of psychology or statistics. 

Another difference is structure. Scientific reports are structured more like mystery or crime stories. First, the setting is established (scientific reports do this by explaining what is currently known about a phenomenon). Then the problem is introduced (by highlighting inconsistencies or gaps in the literature).
