Aim: The aim of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to further develop your academic writing skills by discussing the importance of Registered Nurses (RNs) communicating effectively in healthcare settings. Communication in nursing is a two-way process involving both verbal and non-verbal skills that aims to create a shared understanding and is fundamental to safe healthcare. RNs arc mandated to communicate effectively in healthcare settings (Standard 2 of the RN standards for practice, NMBA, 2016).
This assessment item will assess —
Learning Outcome 1: Identify, describe, and reflect upon the elements of effective interpersonal, intercultural and interprofessional communication including clarification of other health professionals’ roles, to promote safe, caring and collaborative nursing care.
Learning Outcome 2: Demonstrate beginner skills necessary for effective communication in the
academic environment.
Learning Outcome 3: Identify factors that support or hinder effective communication.
Instructions: You need to write an essay of 1500 words. Each of these instructions align to the criteria in the marking rubric. In your essay, you need to: 1. Provide an introduction to your essay that introduces the topic and clearly explains the aim of the essay. You also need to provide a conclusion that summarises the essay, providing a brief recap of the main points without introducing any new concepts (150 words for each = 300 words in total). 2. Discuss the importance of effective communication by discussing three (3) reasons why Registered Nurses (RNs) need to communicate effectively in healthcare settings (450 words) 3. Identify and then explain three (3) effective verbal communication strategies that the RN can use to support a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship (450 words) 4. Outline two (2) non-verbal communication behaviours that could hinder effective communication
