AIM:
According to the Registered Nurses Standards for Practice (2016), to provide safe, effective nursing care, nurses must maintain capability for practice through lifelong learning and professional development. In this assessment task, you will develop the skills required to create a Professional Practice Portfolio in which you can document the evidence of capability for practice as a Registered Nurse in the future and how the Standards for Practice are applied. This assessment item will address course learning outcome 1.

Professional Practice Portfolio
Describes a Professional Practice Portfolio and discusses the recommended components supported by relevant, high quality, evidence-based, scholarly sources from 2016 onwards.

Questions –

Q1: In component 1.1, do we need to describe what a professional practice portfolio is? In this section, you should address two questions: 1) describe what a professional practice portfolio is, and 2) what the recommended components are.

Q2: In component 1, do we need to submit evidence such as our CV, cover letter, etc.? No, this assignment is a written assignment, so you are not asked to compile and submit an actual professional portfolio.

Q3: When it states, “discuss the recommended components,” of the nursing portfolio, does that mean we state the components and why they are included? Or do we briefly talk about what components should be included and then discuss the benefits of including the components in 1.2, when asked to discuss the benefits of the portfolio. The directive word for criterion 1.1 is discuss the recommended components, which means you need to “provide the most important aspects of the portfolio”. Please review workshop 2. For Criterion 1.2 you should discuss the benefits of a Professional Practice Portfolio not the recommended components.

Q4: In component 2, Professional Standards, are we permitted to write in first person? In academic writing, we encourage you to write in third person. However, you will not be marked down if you write in first person in components 2 (Professional Standards) as they are related to your own experience and choice.

Q5: In component 2.1 – does the scenario have to come from 1st year placements or 2nd year placements, and when discussing the scope of practice do we do it from a 1st year’s, 2nd year’s or 3rd year’s perspective? You are allowed to use a scenario from any of your previous placements and explain what scope of practice actually means from a 3rd year student’s perspective (Registered Nurse to-be). For criteria 2.1 and 2.2 you can choose an example that within your scope of practice. You should consider that your example includes 1) where this occurred; 2) who was involved; 3) what you were delegated to do; 4) how you enacted the delegated action and responsibility, and 5) the outcome of the delegated action/responsibility. Do not just list the tasks you were delegated.

Q6: In component 2.2 – Does this section require us to discuss and justify our decisions and actions in relation to the nursing practice that we provide in our scenario? You need to discuss and provide justification for what you did and why. Also, ensure that you reflect upon accountability for your decisions, actions, behaviours and responsibilities, i.e. considering whether you have kept the professional standard (NMBA) in mind.

Q7: Could I write “Professional Practice Portfolio” using “PPP” as an abbreviation? Unfortunately, PPP is not a formal abbreviation, hence, it is not appropriate to use in
academic writing.

Q8: Are we required to use headings and subheadings? You can use a heading for each of the two components of the written assessment. You don’t need subheadings. Make sure that your topic sentence is clear to the marker rather than using subheadings. Remember your word count.
