• Problem-set: High levels of unemployment in South Africa is not caused by low levels of economic growth.  It is an emergence out of a complex system of imbalances in South African society, for example in demography, in income distribution, in skills, in politics, in social fragmentation, in living conditions, etc. These imbalances interact to produce the unemployment crisis which, in turn, reinforces the original imbalances – creating a “wicked” problem with no simple solution.
• Task: Map the historical trends in unemployment and the set of factors that growing unemployment and their trends over the past 40 years. Then explain (and defend) how these drivers could impact on, and interact with, the other factors over the next 40 years – mapping alternative futures: possible, probable and, especially, preferable employment futures.
