You are to conduct your own independent research into an aspect of the origin of the universe. You will present the main ideas of your research in the form of a Scientific Poster.

Research topic
You should focus your research and subsequent poster on one of the following concepts relating to the change of matter in the stages of the development of the Universe.
– inflation
– elementary particle formation
– annihilation of anti-matter and matter
– commencement of nuclear fusion
– cessation of fusion
– the formation of atoms
You should frame your research upon your own student-driven questions which will help you explain your chosen concept. It is recommended that you develop 3 – 4 questions.
Along with reference to Chapter 5.2 (Heineman Physics 11 Fourth Ed), you will need to source reliable information as part of your research and evaluate the credibility of the sources. Use in-text referencing where appropriate and include a bibliography.

Hurdle requirement: Research Outline (due Monday 10 May at 5:00 pm)
You will need to develop an outline or skeleton of your investigation as this will help you identify the information you need. An outline helps you to be organised and focused, which is important when you are managing your time and resources.

Presenting your research
Your scientific poster is to be produced with a target audience of Senior High School students, therefore you should be mindful of terminology used and carefully explain new terms or concepts using appropriate language.
The key skills you to demonstrate (as per the ‘Communicate and explain scientific ideas’ VCE Unit 1 Physics Study Design) are that you are able to:
– use appropriate physics terminology, representations and conventions, including standard abbreviations, graphing conventions and units of measurement
– discuss relevant physics information, ideas, concepts, theories and models and the connections between them
– identify and explain formal physics terminology about investigations and concepts
– use clear, coherent and concise expression
– acknowledge sources of information and use standard scientific referencing conventions
