Task Description:
This Research Essay requires you to:

• create a research portfolio of at least four sources on the Conflict in Indochina 1954 – 1979
• annotate each source with explanatory notes on the information contained in the source
• compose a research essay (1200 words in length) in response to one of four questions below
• submit the hard copy of your portfolio to your teacher on Monday 21 June, 2021
• submit your response in the form of a Google doc (NOT a PDF) to the Google classroom 2020/2021 Modern History Whole Cohort, class code j534cv2 by 8.45am, Monday 21 June, 2021
• provide a hard copy of your essay to your teacher in your Modern History timetabled period

Sources and notes in the portfolio should be organised under the following headings:
The Second Indochina War, including:
– US foreign policy towards Vietnam from 1964
– the nature and effectiveness of the strategy and tactics employed by the North Vietnamese Army, the National Liberation Front, the Army of the Republic of Vietnam and the USA
– impact of the 1968 Tet Offensive
– impact of the war on civilians in Vietnam
– the nature and significance of anti-war movements in the USA and Australia
– the reasons for and the nature of the US withdrawal
– the reasons for the Communist victory in Vietnam

Task Requirements:
Choose one of the following four questions to complete your response.
1. Assess the nature of the strategy and tactics used by the USA and Vietcong forces in the Second Indochina War in relation to their effectiveness.

2. How significant were the anti-war movements in the USA and Australia in the withdrawal of US troops?

3. Evaluate the effect of US foreign policy towards Vietnam until 1964 on the beginnings of the Second Indochina War.
