Material Explaining how to be Persuasive.
Job Aid Writing an Argument Paper Terms and ideas to know Thesis – a thesis introduces the reader to your topic and provides a roadmap to your paper. Refutation – a refutation is the opinion of others that you disagree with. When writing refutations, it is imperative that you restate others’ opinions honestly and in detail. This increases your credibility as the writer. Transitions – transitions are words that lead the reader into the next idea. For example, when you are moving from your opinion to a refutation you might write something like this, “Opponents argue that…”; or “Those who disagree say that…” Research and logic – always, always, always provide accurate and well-document facts when writing an argument. Nothing is worse than to argue a point with someone only to find out later that he or she was right all along; you just hadn’t done the research. Keep in mind, opinion, reason, and logic are the name of the game. Both sides can almost always find research to support his or her opinion. Make your argument logical and support it well. Audience – know your audience. This cannot be stressed enough. You don’t want to insult the person(s) you are speaking to, and you need to be aware of what methods of persuasion might win him or her over. Repetition – Keep the essay focused and do not be repetitive. State your point, support it, and move on. If you have to be repetitive, you may not be as opposed to or in favor of the topic as you think. Argumentative appeals – there are three common appeals to argumentative writing: logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos – logos is an approach to argument that appeals to the reader’s sense of logic. When writing an argument paper using this approach, you will use facts, examples, statistics, expert testimony, and/or personal experience. Ethos – ethos is an approach to argument in which the writer attempts to prove his point by showing he is concerned, fair-minded, and reliable. He is trustworthy, convincing, and credible. He truly cares about the topic and about you. It’s extremely important that tact be maintained throughout the paper, as credibility will be lost with just one insult. Pathos – pathos is an approach to argument that appeals to the reader’s emotions, to create fear or anger or sadness.
