As stated in the course information, each student in the LAWS8103/JURD7503 class is asked to collaborate on a small group presentation exploring the key themes of one of the class readings. All readings are available on Leganto which can be accessed via the course Moodle page.

Your group, comprising Mary Habashy, Cynthia Offor-Ugwuka and Josh Robertson, has been assigned the following reading for a presentation of no more than 10 minutes duration for class on Tuesday 7th July:

Hope, T. (2005). Pretend it Doesn’t Work: The ‘Antisocial’ Bias in the Maryland Scientific Methods Scale.  European Journal on Criminal Policy and Research, 11, pp275-296.

It is recommended that you read all essential readings and watch any required videos for next week’s lesson before reading the paper. Note that the Powerpoint module for the lesson will be on Moodle by close of business Friday. You may also read and briefly cite any additional papers that are relevant to the theme if you wish (though this is not essential). You should then collectively prepare a powerpoint presentation that succinctly conveys:

• What is the focus of the paper?
• What are the key arguments or themes presented by the author(s)?
• Does the paper convincingly support or challenge other crime prevention theory that you are aware of (especially theories conveyed in class readings for the week)?
• Does the paper have any key implications for crime prevention and/or criminal justice policy or practice?
• Do your group members agree or disagree with any of the author’s key observations or arguments? 

Three ‘meeting rooms’ have been created on the Collaborate page for Week 1 where you can meet online to plan your project if you wish – you can however meet and plan as you choose. Please forward your powerpoint to me by 12.30pm on the day of the lecture for group members to speak to during our lecture. It would be appreciated if each group member emailed me to confirm your consent for me to post your presentation on Moodle after you present. It is not essential that all group members present, however you should ensure that work and preparation for this presentation is equitably distributed among group members. It is also recommended that all group members have the opportunity to review and contribute to content created by other group members before your presentation. In the event that group members have differing views on the content then both views could be shared in your presentation. 

This assessment task will constitute 15% of the final subject grade for members of your group. Assessment gives consideration to how effectively your presentation addresses the five key bullet points outlined above. Written feedback will be provided in the week after your presentation but marks will not be posted until all students have presented.
