This article focuses on the opportunities for language and literacy learning that rich learning spaces and designs provide within an early years classroom. In particular, prospects for such learning may be provided by an early years leaning space I designed in my third year of teacher education (primary), which won the Early Childhood category of the Oxford University Press Education Innovation Award 2014. Included in this article are recognition and exploration of key frameworks, approaches and practices as well as the latest and evolving research.

The Third Teacher

The presence of astonishment or perplexityshould not plague the minds of educators whenobserving how students can deflate in certainlearning environments yet flourish in others. Theconcept of the environment as the ‘third teacher’ (Stonehouse, 2011) conveys the idea that rich learningenvironments should be engaging, interactive,friendly and secure. Moreover, such spaces shouldspark imagination and inspire collaborative as wellas independent learning. The question remainshowever of how to implement this valuable ‘thirdteacher’ notion into the practical learning of language and literacy.
