Assignment Title: The effectiveness of relevant theories and principles of team and individual leadership, coaching and mentoring in healthcare practice

Introduction

The purpose of this unit is to enable students to understand the role and contribution of mentorship in health and social care, which is to support the personal development and lifelong learning of staff. Mentorship is achieved through effective leadership, mentoring and/or coaching. Health and social care workers need to be able to differentiate between team and individual leadership, mentoring and coaching, and know how to apply these in their own practice.
This unit will support students’ understanding of mentoring as establishing and developing learning relationships that support people to take charge of their own development. The unit will enable students to develop their confidence and motivation, through self-reflection and improved understanding, and their interpersonal skills. Further, this unit aims to develop students’ practice in being able to lead, mentor and coach others in health and social care-related environments.
Students will review relevant theories, approaches and principles of leadership, mentoring and coaching, as well as considering the purposes and benefits of mentoring in health and social care practice. Further, students will plan, implement and review a period of mentoring in their own workplace.
The focus on personal and professional development through developing others will support students’ progress through lifelong learning and increase their capacity to develop as well-rounded practitioners in the sector. The learning gained from this unit can also provide the foundation for undertaking further professional qualifications in coaching.

By the end of this unit students will be able to:
Review theories and principles of team and individual leadership, mentoring and coaching in health and social care.

Assessment Brief and Submission Guidance
This unit requires you to take on a coaching and mentoring role in your current workplace setting. This must be organised by the start of your work on this unit and agreed by your workplace supervisor/manager.
Submission is in the form of an individual report, and a portfolio of evidence which should be written in a concise, academic style throughout. You are required to make use of headings, paragraphs, and subsections as appropriate. All work must be supported with research with references and bibliography using the Harvard referencing system.
The recommended word limit for the report is 2000–2500 words and for written evidence in the portfolio is 2500–3000 words. Exceeding the word count limits will not be penalised. The portfolio should include a reflective evaluation of your use of mentoring and/or coaching techniques in practice in your workplace setting, as well as any artefact evidence, planning and observation records, witness testimony, mentee, and supervisor feedback.
You should submit the report and the portfolio in a single word-processed document where the portfolio may be included as an appendix in the end of the report.
WRITTEN REPORT
Your report will be based on the case scenario detailed below. In your written report, you should review theories and principles of team and individual leadership, mentoring and coaching in health and social care. You should also explore how mentorship, through mentoring and coaching practices, can benefit individuals and organisations in care environments.
Case Scenario:
An 89-year-old female resident with Alzheimer’s disease has been living at the nursing home for many years. The family decides they no longer want aggressive measures taken and request that the resident’s code status be changed to Do Not Resuscitate (DNR). The evening shift documents in the progress note that the family (and designated health care agent) requested that the resident’s status be made DNR. The evening shift does not relay the information during shift change or on the 24-hour report or notify the attending physician. The day shift does not read the night shift’s notes because of several immediate emergencies. The family, who had been keeping vigil at her bedside, leaves to go home to shower and eat. Upon return, they find the staff attempting cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The resident is successfully resuscitated but now lies in a vegetative state. The family is very unhappy and considering legal action.
Activity:
As the ward manager, to avoid such incident in the future, you decided to work with other ward managers by making strategic plan on mentoring and coaching new nurses and healthcare assistants.
In this report, you should be focusing on reviewing theories and principles of team and individual leadership, mentoring and coaching in health and social care. You should do this by assessing the impact of theories, and principles of team and individual leadership, on own style of coaching and mentoring as applied in practice. You will also be analysing own approach to coaching or mentoring other workers in a care environment in a leadership role. You should also include a comparison of relevant theories of team and individual leadership in relation to practice in care environments. To support your comparisons and arguments, you should also discuss models of coaching and mentoring in relation to supporting practice in care environments.
In your report, you will also explore how mentorship, through mentoring and coaching practices, can benefit individuals and organisations in care environments. You should do this by critically reviewing the effectiveness of own leadership and mentoring practice in supporting the development of workers in own care setting. To support your review, you should include a debate about the benefits of coaching and mentoring for individuals and organisations in different care environment. Your discussion should also include the impact of mentorship strategies on practice in organisations and on workers receiving this support.PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT
Your portfolio will be developed based on the case scenario detailed below. While developing your portfolio, you should apply mentoring and coaching techniques to support mentorship of individuals in care environments and review own leadership and mentoring practice in a care environment.
Case Scenario:
You have been involved in mentoring and coaching of care assistants in your workplace for a period of one year. As a result, you are required to produce an annual written end-of-placement mentorship evaluation. Evaluation is a process of collating, recording, organising, analysing, reviewing and critically examining information about the work completed.
Activity:
While developing your academic portfolio, you should use the information from your critical review about the effectiveness of own leadership and mentoring practice in supporting the development of workers in own care setting as discussed in the written report above.
To develop your portfolio, you should follow the guidelines below:
Apply mentoring and coaching techniques to support mentorship of individuals in care environments. In your portfolio, implement a series of planned, informal mentoring sessions to support care assistants in own setting, using different theories of communication and reflect on the impact of barriers on the experience of care assistants being mentored. Your portfolio should also include creation of a plan for the delivery of a series of practical mentoring sessions within own work setting to support care assistants and discuss how communication theories are reflected in the plan to provide effective support to care assistants.
As you undertake this task, ensure you review own leadership and mentoring practice in a care environment by ensuring that you:
Critically reflect on the effectiveness of own leadership and mentoring practice in improving own development and the quality of provision in own workplace setting. You will also be reviewing the impact of own leadership and mentoring style on own practice and that of others. To support your arguments and reflection in your report, you should also discuss own leadership and or mentoring styles as applied in practice within own workplace setting and examine the impact of own leadership and mentoring on the practice of own mentee.
