INTRODUCTION

Communication is a constant process of transaction and creation of message (Lambrini Kourkouta, 2014). It occurs in context of the cultural and social values, psychological conditions and the physical space where the communication takes place (Lambrini Kourkouta, 2014). Effective communication between nurses and the patient is very important for obtaining a successful outcome of the individualised nursing care of the patient (Lambrini Kourkouta, 2014). This helps the patient to express himself and his feelings and experiences (Lambrini Kourkouta, 2014). It therefore then requires the nurse to understand the concerns of the patient and help them by demonstrating sincerity, kindness and courtesy (Lambrini Kourkouta, 2014). 

This essay is based on the case study of a 76-year-old bilingual immigrant man named Angelo Bucci who was presenting mental health issues, relationship, and sexuality problems, weight loss and troubled sleeping patterns. The following parts of this essay will address the communication goals and the strategies implemented to develop a rapport with the patient by using effective communication. The essay will further discuss the barriers which will be encountered due to social, cultural, environmental, emotional, and age-related factors and then explore the effective strategies used to overcome these factors. 

COMMUNICATION GOALS

The main goal of the nurse-patient communication is to create a warm, positive, and compassionate experience for the patient. It requires the creation of meaningful patient engagement and delivering patient education to create the patient centric care plan. In this case, the goal was to understand the patients concerns, assess the patient’s mood, relieve the stress from the patient and establish a strong nurse-patient therapeutic relationship. The goal was also to explain the patient about consent and obtain it again and educate them for the help and support available.
