The aphorism was spoken by Maya Angelo in front of the congregation of the united states as it bore witness to the inauguration of it 42nd president Bill Clinton who had commissioned Maya to speak on the occasion. Maya was a well-known poet and her poem the pulse of the morning was where the aphorism comes from. Within the poem Maya refers to the evolution of man through history and the stable of the trees, rocks, and rivers within man’s domain. moya proceeds to describe the almost incomprehenshonable pain, suffering, blood and turmoil these trees, rocks and rivers have born witness to through the years at the hands of man. She continues to describe the amount of pain and suffering man has endured and created standing on, sitting beneath, and drinking from theses timeless natural artefacts. More directly moya proclaims that all man has a place alongside each of these sentient objects. But as she proclaims may no longer linger in their shadows they must forsake the war and pain that they have stained the soils and waters with. We cannot unlive or forget the evils and atrocities done to us and our forebears. But if we face our history and our ancestor’s history with courage, without fear or shame. We may avoid repeating the atrocities done in the past in an attempt to bring about a brighter future.
