If we look closely at the reasons why people come to be in need of social work services, it is often because they have experienced one or more of the ‘five faces’ of oppression: exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism or violence (Young, 1990).
Two years ago, members of your campus community, students enrolled in the Philosophy SWK1102 unit, had a number of questions about how ECU was responding to climate change. They had questions about sustainability and social work. The starting point for this project is forming a group then developing a comprehensive Asset Map together. Then individually you undertake an Engagement Activity with a person in the community and then undertake an Analysis.The essence of community work practice is the idea of anti-oppressive practice – a declaration that oppression based on differences of gender, dis/ability, age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, social class, and even species is not okay.
Recently, the term eco-social work has been used to link social work knowledge and values with social work practice premised on care for the planet, care for people and fair share. Care for the planet comes first because the well-being of ALL species depends on the health of the biosphere – that 20km-wide band of air, water, soil and biodiversity which hugs the Earth.

Required activities & timeline for the Workbook (ON campus)
You can see from the timeline below that preparation and ongoing engagement with the Workbook is essential. You need to be setting aside time every week to work on the Workbook – much of this will take the form of thinking, consulting, collaborating, mind-mapping, concept-mapping, action-planning, thinking some more. There will not be a lot of time needed for academic research.
You will need to be fully prepared to work with the complexities of managing your own time (for your Asset Map ) and managing the complexities, indecision, conflict and other group dynamics inevitable when you work with others (including the lecturer) who may have very different opinions, skills, agendas and ambitions to your own.
If it becomes impossible for you to complete your project for some reason, this does not mean you fail this assessment. You can demonstrate your knowledge and skills in this area by considering why the project didn’t take off and what could have been done differently with reference to community development models and the roles and skills needed. Such a report would have a stronger academic focus.
