Purpose of Assignment Two:

(1) to develop skills and competence in doing research literature searches using a range of approaches and data bases

(2) to develop skills and competence in critically searching for social work research literature, reading social work research literature, critically evaluating the literature and writing up a literature review that analyses the gaps in the= literature with the goal to develop a research question that refers to a particular methodology (or methodologies) and research methods;

(3) to describe and critically analyse the political and ethical contexts of your research topic/question;

(4) to compile an appendix of the literature search process

Topic: You should select a field of social work practice early in the trimester. From that field, select a specific aspect or topic area you have a particular interest in knowing more about or believe social work can contribute to. Conduct a literature search for appropriate scholarly sources on that topic. Critically compare and evaluate the range of literature related to this problem/aspect of social work. A critical discussion needs to consider the following:
 

(1) What does the literature contribute toknowledge about this issue?
(2) What are limitations or gaps in theliterature?
(3) What research question you would like to investigate that will help fill this or these gaps and contribute to knowledge about this issue? YOU MUST INCLUDE a research question.
(4) What research methodology (or methodologies) and research methods wouldbe most appropriate to investigating your research question?
(5) What is the political and ethical context ofyour topic/question?
