Assignment Task:

Purpose:  The purpose of this paper is for you to explore the operations function of an existing organization utilizing operations management terminology discussed in class and your text.

Assignment:  You are expected to select an organization and a process.  This may be a service organization, a manufacturing organization, a government entity, a health service organization or another that you are familiar with.  No duplicate organizations are allowed.  For each section below, provide specific examples using the operations management terminology discussed in class and your text.  Define the terms as you use them, and use visuals whenever appropriate.  

DUE to 3/9- Proposal:  Describe the organization or part of the organization that you will be using for this project.  Be sure that you can create all deliverables for this project – if not you will need to discuss it with the professor or select another organization.  What process will you focus on?  What product or service does it create?  Why did you make this choice?  (1-page minimum submitted to Blackboard.)
Proposal Presentation:  No slides necessary.  Please explain the details of your written proposal, WITHOUT READING.

FINAL PAPER REQUIREMENTS:  (Questions are to help guide you through the required sections….Not all questions need answering and may include additional aspects of each heading.)

Overview and Environment: Describe the organization.  What is the product or service?  What is the ownership structure?  What are its competitive advantages?  What are its operation’s competitive advantages?  Describe the industry.  Who are its primary competitors?  How does the competitive environment affect its operations?  Describe some recent operational, infrastructural, and structural decisions.  Do/did they create any radical/disruptive innovations?  Were they ever impacted by any radical/disruptive innovations?

Process Description:  Pick a product or service of this organization.  Discuss the product’s location in the product life cycle.  What production process do they use to create this product/service?  What is the layout type?  What are the inputs to this process?  What transformational activities do they perform to add value?  What are the outputs?  Describe the process using a flow chart, a process activity chart, service system mapping, or value-stream mapping.  What is their capacity strategy?

Recommendation:  Choose one area and present an operational recommendation.  MUST provide scholarly sources as evidence for your recommendation.  
OPTIONAL HEADINGS:
Inventory: Describe the organization’s inventory: raw material, WIP, MRO, finished goods.  Where in the process do they hold inventory?  What are the plusses and minuses of holding inventory for this organization?  How do they decide when to order and how much to order (forecasting methods)?  Does the organization use any just-in-time or lean practices?
Quality:  Describe the organization’s approach to quality for the product/service.  How do they ensure quality?  Incorporate the components of TQM.  Are they ISO certified?  Do they use Six-Sigma?  Do they use any of the tools discussed in class (chapter 11)?  What lean concepts do they use (chapter 12)?

Technology:  Describe the technology and integration they use for supply management.  Do they use any tools discussed in class?

Supply Chain: Describe the organization’s supply chain.  Who are its most important suppliers?  Who are its customers?  Do they outsource?  Do they use a many suppliers’ strategies or a few supplier’s strategy?
  
Global:  Describe any global components of this organization.
