In this essay it is expected that you 

1. contrast the terms sensation with perception. This can be very tricky as the dictionary often treats them like they are the same however you must distinguish the anatomical features that receive information from the environment, with the way your brain interprets these cues. 
2. Provide 4 different pieces of evidence that sensation and perception are not the same. This means dealing with four different senses and the ways in which perception is variable even if the sensory anatomy does not vary.

1. An introduction that covers the definition of aerobic respiration, what factors are need for it to occur, what it produces, where it occurs and why it is important. All what back up mechanism do we have when it fails and to what degree will that back up mechanism keep us alive. 
2. For the following diseases, an explanation of the anatomy they affect and why they might cause a reduction in respiration. How does that reduction in respiration affect people with these conditions and are there any treatments? 

• Mitochondrial disorders (there are many of these, choose one, it must cause the mitochondria to be impaired) 

• A life-threatening asthma attack
• Diabetes type 1 when the person is hypoglycemic

• Sickle cell anaemia 

Essay Question Three – Uncovering the facts 

Scenario: You work for a Government body that is very interested in limiting the spread of STIs and the teenage pregnancy rate. You are to publish a magazine article aimed at engaging 16 year old’s (You can choose your own title for the article if you would prefer not to use mine). The aim is to teach girls about how their body works, the process of fertilisation, pathologies of the female reproductive system and how to prevent STIs. Your expression needs to be simple enough for a young person to understand even though it will include complex ideas such as 

1. The names of the parts of the female reproductive system 
2. Briefly discuss purpose and timeline of menstruation (i.e. you do not need to mention the hormones involved but identify the different events that happen during the cycle and when they occur) 
3. Describe the journey that sperm takes through the reproductive system and explain how and wear it might be involved in fertilisation. 
4. Explanations of ectopic pregnancy, twin production, endometriosis, Human papillomavirus, chlamydia and herpes. (ensure that you differentiate between the terms STI and STD) 
5. Provide different methods women may use to prevent STIs and/or pregnancy 
6. Describe the role of doctors in assisting women in maintaining a healthy reproductive system
