Please choose one of the following essay questions for your Assessment Task 3 – Final Essay:

1. “pursuing happiness, positivity, and wellbeing has become synonymous with being a good person” (Hyman, p. 103) What accounts for the contemporary preoccupation with pursuing happiness, and what impact is this happiness project having in relation to one area of social life? (Choose either: social media; mental health; career; consumer culture; or the self-improvement industry.

2. How can fear and anxiety shape social issues? Draw from psychodynamic ideas to discuss in relation to either: racism; poverty; gender; or an intersectional approach that incorporates two or more of these factors together.

3. How does the deliberate manipulation of our emotions shape specific areas of social behaviour or thinking? Consider in relation to one of: conspiracy theories, a political issue, climate change, or the self-project.

4. Assess the role of psychology as a discipline as an influence in producing social norms in an area of practice. Choose from: gender; advertising; the military; gambling.

All of these questions are quite broad. This means that you will need to shape or narrow the focus of your inquiry. We will support you in this process in the second half of semester. The first step is for you to read through the questions, think about what you could address in them, then choose the one you think will be of most interest to you.
