Sonja is a 20-year-old student from Broome, WA. In March 2014 she started her Bachelor in Veterinary Science at Murdoch University in Perth. She moved into a shared apartment in Kardinya area, which is close to her campus. However, due to financial difficulties, she was forced to look for a part-time job in order to pay for her $7000 annual rental expenses. In June 2014 she commences work as a barmaid at the ‘Riders Pub’ in Cloverdale (Perth). This job requires her to work on weeknights from 7pm – 11 pm and during the same hours every other weekend. Though the work carried the risk of being harassed by drunk customers on occasions, it conveniently allowed her to attend her university classes during the day while her wages from the evening shifts helped cover her rental expenses. 

In January 2015 Sonja’s grandfather, Gerald, pays her a visit in Perth and is disheartened on discovering that his favorite granddaughter had to work as a barmaid to pay for her accommodation, yet none of his other grandchildren worked while they were studying. Gerald persuades Sonja to quit her job by promising to pay her $7000 annual rental expenses on a fortnightly basis. On 1 February 2015 Sonja quits her job at the ‘Riders Pub’. She later informs Gerald about her resignation and requests for money for her upcoming rental expenses. To her surprise, Gerald tells her that he was just ‘talking like a loving grandparent’ when he promised the $7000 and that he had changed his mind and would not be sending her any money. 

Sonja is distressed and unable to find another job to help cover her rental expenses. She is unsure whether she can take any action against Gerald and comes to you to seek your help. Advise Sonja on any legal action she can take against Gerald.
