• Research a topic in performance history between 1600 and 1900, by selecting a topic, articulating a question, identifying relevant primary and secondary sources, evaluating source material, and sharing findings with peers;
• Articulate a simple argument in writing, following scholarly conventions, in a clear and well-organized manner;

Part 1: Create a Research Question
You begin by identifying a specific topic in theatre history that interests you and falls within the time period the class covers (for example, you may look at stage technology in neoclassical theatre). Then, you create a short (250 word) research question (for example, what kinds of lighting was used in France during the neoclassical period?). The research question is pass/fail – you may be required to revise and resubmit it in order to move on to the next parts of the research project.

Part 2: Annotated Bibliography
Once your research question is approved, you will develop an annotated bibliography of research that will help you to answer your question. Your annotated bibliography will briefly summarize 5 secondary sources (scholarly book chapters or journal articles), and 3 primary sources (plays, images, drawings, or writing from the period). You will be using the material we cover in class (primary and secondary sources) for your research paper, but these do not count toward your annotated bibliography.
