Applying topics in Cognitive Psychology 

Pick a topic we have discussed in class and explain how it has (or could) improve your life. Such improvements could be practical (better study methods), philosophical (you better understand why some concepts are hard to define), economical (you can make better decisions), or life-style related (you know to not waste time on brain training programs). These options are only meant to be representative; almost anything that improves your life or understanding of the world would be appropriate. 

For your selected topic, you should describe it carefully and thoroughly, frame it within larger topics of cognitive psychology, and then explain how learning about the topic improves your life. You can use sources outside of the lecture notes, but it does not make sense to stray too far from the classroom material. You can present more than one improvement, if necessary. The description can be at a general level (e.g., you better understand how brain chemistry is related to depression) or can use specific examples (e.g., after changing your study methods, your quiz scores have gone up by 10 points). 

Format: Your report should be 3-5 pages long, single-spaced typed, one-inch margins, with 11 or 12-point font in Times New Roman, Arial, or a similar font. Your name should be on the front page. Appropriate document formats include MS Word (or something similar) and PDF. The filename should be your last name and your first name (e.g., JonesTom.docx or SmithJane.pdf). 

Grading: Grading follows the TACO criteria defined on the next page. A score of 10 requires that the report be free of error (typos, grammar problems, satisfies the format). You will lose points if you try to “trick” the grader by, for example, using a larger font for periods or spaces that modify the line spacing. 

Advice: The overall goal of the essay is to convince the reader that you understand your selected topic and have properly explained how it relates (or could relate) to some improvement in your life. Thus, you need to describe the topic correctly and make a reasonable argument about how it corresponds to a life improvement.
