In his essay (2019), Kenyan author Binyavanga Wainaina talks about the multiple ways in which the West circulates a stereotypical narrative of Africa which renders the vast continent to be a homogeneous space of rolling grasslands with hot weather and wild-animals, consisting of dying and warring savage, tribal populace people who eat monkey-brain as their preferred cuisine, and are the enemy of development. Such a depiction, he suggests, effectively reinforces the erstwhile colonial narrative where the malnourished, impoverished, backward people are in dire need of help and aid from the West in order to get a taste of civilization. Much like how African characters were depicted through stock characters of violence and comical-effect during the Colonial Rule, the contemporary literary, media and cultural productions by European creators also represent the contemporary Africa as colourful, exotic, larger than life—but empty inside. Wainaina, through his satiric piece, deliberately brings our attention to the multiple ways in which the diverse living breathing

experiences of Africa get subsumed within the powerful histories the West writes of the continent. Aided by the global dominance and circulation of the Western discourses1, these narratives do not exist merely as odd cases of Western interpretation of Africa, but gain the currency of becoming the representative Histories22of the place and the people – something Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie terms as a “single story” of Africa (2009).
