The aim of this assignment is for you to:

• Develop and demonstrate an understanding of one or more of the key population concepts covered in Weeks 2 to 4.

• Develop an ability to interpret and apply these concepts to particular species and situations.

• Become familiar with a range of local or international scientific (peer-reviewed) literature.

Choose one of the following topics and write your essay based on a review of the literature and your understanding of population concepts.

• Monsoon rainforest trees in north-western Australia exist in a series of small spatially-isolated populations. Discuss the role of metapopulation structure in maintaining population viability in these species.
 

• What factors contribute to the successful introduction of species to areas beyond their natural range, and why? Discuss with reference to population processes, using successful and unsuccessful introductions to northern or central Australia as illustrations. Hint: You could include species that are introduced deliberately (e.g. species that deliver a service to humans or re-introductions of endangered species) or accidental introductions. If you prefer to focus on examples from a different region this is possible but please check in advance with the lecturer.
 

• What limits the populations of mammals (especially larger mammals, native or introduced) in northern Australia? Discuss the role of carrying capacity, density dependence and other processes in shaping population limits.
 

• Critically evaluate the value and limits of captive breeding in managing the population processes adversely affecting threatened species.
 

• Explain seasonal and inter-annual population fluctuations in Magpie Geese in terms of carrying capacity, density dependence, environmental stochasticity and Allee effects.
