Course Description 
The Post Professional transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree at Utica College is a clinical doctorate. As such, students are expected to carry out a culminating doctoral project. Upon completion of all other core requirements, students enroll in PHT 816 and complete their doctoral projects of varying credit.  PHT816-Community Health Program will have you focus on working individually, identifying a public health issue related to a community need, and the generation of a program or mechanism for addressing that issue. The expectation is for the eventual publication and/or presentation of this project in a professional forum. All students present their work to the instructor and their peers at the end of the course

Course Objectives 
At the completion of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Formulate clinical questions that can be addressed through educational programs.
2. Construct an effective search strategy for finding appropriate literature to address clinical questions.
3. Critique research literature objectively.
4. Assess research findings to determine if answers exist to predetermined clinical questions.
5. Evaluate the ethical issues related to conducting a community health program.
6. Choose between the various formats for performing public health programs (public presentations, pamphlets and public awareness campaigns, clinical programs) to best relay your content to the audience.
7. Investigate the optimal venue for public health programs (location, medium).
8. Design a presentation that effectively integrates cultural competence and portrays to your audience all components of your community health program.
9. Critique peers’ projects objectively by providing formative and summative feedback.
10. Assess and incorporate the feedback provided during the peer review process.
11. Examine the role that core values/ethical behaviors and professional communication play in relation to conflict resolution, negotiation skills and networking.

Objectives of the Practicum Project
The activities that underlie the final doctoral project in this course include projects involving physical therapy/public health service delivery. The end product is a formal presentation and additional handouts that reflect: 
1) an insightful and well-summarized synopsis of the research or service activity the student has performed, 
2) professional literature that supports the student’s rationale for carrying out the research project or service activity, and 
3) a clear understanding of the relevance of the project to physical therapy service.
