This case study is the second assessment for NURS5046. For this assessment you are required to review the case study (see below) and develop a report identifying areas of concern which require immediate action. The report should include recommendations on the areas for action. 

The report should be a maximum of 1500 words +/- 10% and adhere to APA 7th ed. Format, style and referencing. As this is a report you will need to include an introduction, analysis of the case study, evaluation of the clinical indicators (including a comparison of these to national benchmarks, where available), provide possible evidence based solutions and a conclusion.

Case Study – St Judd Health Care (SJHC)

The health care service was established in 2000 and provides comprehensive healthcare. The health service has achieved accreditation and met the National Accreditation Health Standards. Recently, however, there has been a number of media news reports focusing on the overcrowding and standards of care in the Emergency Department, where patients were not receiving the best care and waiting times for elective surgery had increased in all areas, particularly orthopaedics. 

The media reports include: 

a) How patients are waiting up to 24 hours for a bed when being admitted through the Emergency Department.

b) How mental health patients have been waiting in the Emergency Department for 2 days before a bed was available in the Mental Health Unit.

c) How infection rates within the health care service is now double to that of other health services within the region.

d) How a patient had died following an incorrect drug administration.

e) How due to the high number of patient falls in the health care service, older patients are in danger of dying whilst being an inpatient. 

Profile SJHC is an Acute Hospital inpatient 783-bed public major tertiary hospital. Services include: 

• A 100-bed Rehabilitation Service, a 30-bed purpose-built mental health unit, burns service, general surgery, general medicine, paediatrics, mental health, maternity services and urgent care services. 

• Eighty three per cent of patient rooms are single occupancy, offering increased comfort and privacy and increased infection control. 

• Six operating rooms, Cancer Centre, Radiology and Pathology and a speciality outpatient department. 

• Leaders in research and education, for example they have the most advanced medical equipment and state-of-the-art information and communications technology.
