Overview
Welcome to Communication Skills for Nurses and Midwives (NUM1102).
This unit introduces the student to interpersonal and professional modes of communication and conduct that support effective and efficient functioning of clients, colleagues and institutions. Oral and written communication skills including effective listening, professional and therapeutic relationships and managing difficult situations are a feature of this unit. Students will use role play to develop their skills in giving and receiving feedback, reflective thinking, decision making and managing professional conduct issues. Academic literacy will be introduced as a foundation to a successful professional discourse. The relationship between communication and professional conduct in relation to the role of the nurse as a service provider and contributor to the health care community are central to this unit.

In order to pass the unit, you will need to:
Achieve an overall percentage of 50% or more;
Assessment due dates are strictly adhered to and penalties apply for late submission of assessments in accordance with the Assessment, Examination and Moderation Procedures (PDF file, 140.4KB, opens in new window).
If you require an extension of time to complete an assessment (other than an end of semester exam), you need to submit a request in writing to the Unit Coordinator using the Application for Extension on assignment form (PDF file, 156.7 KB, opens in new window). Requests can be made for a maximum of seven calendar days and must be submitted prior to the assessment due date. Extension requests beyond seven calendar days can only be granted in exceptional circumstances by the Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning.
Instructions
There are three parts to this assessment:
Part 1: Define health literacy and discuss two key challenges presented by poor health literacy for the individual or the health care system. (400 words maximum).
Part 2: Discuss how the nurse can help patients (or the public) to improve their health literacy (400 words maximum). You are expected to write your responses to Part 1 and Part 2 in paragraphs (400 words max for each part). An introduction and conclusion are not required for this assessment.
You will use the journal extracts from the academic sources provided to write your well-constructed paragraphs. You will also need to find at least one source of your own related to each topic. You can add sources cited (referenced) in the provided articles as long as they have been published within the last seven years (2013+). Prior to completing your task, please review Module 6 of the Academic Skills Online Modules or consider attending the targeted workshop for assignment 1 or one generic academic skills workshops on paraphrasing, referencing and writing academic paragraphs.
Part 3: Write an end-text reference list of the sources provided in APA (7th edition) style as well as any additional references you have sourced. You will need to access the academic sources provided using the ECU library systems to find all the bibliographic details needed in order to write the end-text reference list.
