Essay RequirementsYour essay should include an introduction, exposition, argument, and conclusion.
Introduction
Your introduction should be very short (3-4 sentences) and provide a thesis statement and a roadmap (e.g. First, I will discuss…next I will…finally, I argue that…).
Your thesis statement should take a clear position in the form of “In this essay, I will argue that…because…”.
Body
Your body should be split into two parts: exposition and argumentExposition: Describe deontology.
Argument: Argue for your position (yes or no). If you disagree, explain why. If you agree, come up with a response to a potential disagreement with virtue theory.
Conclusion
Your conclusion should be very short (3-4 sentences) and summarize your main argumentative points.

Tips
- Get right to the point. Start your paper with “In this essay, I will argue that…because…”
- Write with short, concise sentences. Use small words. Philosophical ideas are complicated enough – there is no need to complicate them further with confusing language.
- Do not start with grand statements like, “since the beginning of time, philosophers have argued about…”. These statements are false and unnecessary.
- Write in a formal tone, but personal pronouns are acceptable (e.g. “I argue that…”)
- Do not write about what you believe, what you think, or what your opinion is. You need to make an argument – merely believing, thinking, or having an opinion on something is not enough.
- Do not count sentences or paragraphs. It does not matter how many you have of each. Use the organizational structure that makes the most sense for your assignment.
- Do not count arguments or main points. It is better to have one well-developed argument rather than several poorly developed ones.
- Word LimitThere is a word limit of 1500 words for this essay. You may write fewer than 1500 words but doing so may put you at risk of being too brief.
- CitationsDo not use any resources except for course material on Nexus and your textbook for this assignment. Lecture videos and slides do not need to be cited. When citing from the textbook in-text, use the format (Jordan et al., page #). For example, an in-text citation of the textbook on page 17 would be (Jordan et al., 17). When citing the reading in your bibliography, refer to resources from the Library. Use APA format.
