Get Help Now!Distinguished Participants, Ladies and Gentlemen,
It is a great honor for me to deliver, on behalf of Ministry of health, UAE, a keynote speech at this very important forum on the challenges of a dental organisation related to leadership. I would like to congratulate the Dental Society of UAE for excellent arrangements for this seminar and for their hospitality. I would like to extend my gratitude towards this monarchy and its government for its continuous support of the people in health sector and this organization, and would like to appreciate the enormous efforts of organizing committee who happen to be my colleagues as well, who have worked very hard to conceptualize the substance and importance of this seminar. Today, I would like to brief on how the profession of dentistry is being shaped in an everchanging environment, how the role of a dentist goes beyond the technical skills and delves into the arena of leadership to prepare a career that translates one’s vision into workplace culture to inspire team, build integrity, creativity, confidence to innovate and succeed towards better patient outcomes. I would like to discuss the theory-based scopes and attributes of clinician managers and appraise different relevant leadership practices in our daily work practice and principles applicable in our work setting and the challenges faced in general. As you appreciate, the topics are quite wide ranging, I hope to clarify and discuss on these issues further during the discussions following this keynote speech.
2. Leadership scopes of a Dental Clinician and attributes. Ladies and Gentlemen, It is believed that the crucial role of effective leadership benefits to institutional success and employee engagement (Raja, 2012; Vinarski-Peretz & Carmeli, 2011). Many organizations have taken a step ahead to devote resources to the development of such a model in their business (Taichman et al., 2012). However, it is observed that the health care industry devoted very little emphasis on the development of leadership skills amongst the healthcare professionals, specially those who find themselves to take the roles as dentist and as clinic managers and who depend on an uninspiring guidance model (Fruge et al., 2010). Forbes et al, 2004 determined that refined leadership skills and exercising with distinguished attitudes, and abilities is important to direct a clinical managers success. The role of a clinical manager as a dentist not only assumes provision of management assistance but as well as provide clinical expertise in the dental setting. It has been noted through various studies that such managers have insufficient mentoring skills and knowledge regarding the traditional theories of leadership (Fulop, 2012). Avolio et al., 2004 showed studies related to improvements in psychological empowerment (PE) and engagement among employees through effective leadership in an organization. Although, there are researches in the practicing different methodology or styles of leadership like transactional and transformational styles, some researchers (e.g., Fulop et al., 2010) have found the use of a hybrid style quite effective in presenting a fine balance between the transformational leadership in the forefront with distributive style in the background. Certain other aspects are also equally important like emotional intelligence (EI) as mention by Goleman and Boyatzis (2008), being very important in leadership. According to George, 2000, EI is quite useful in areas related to collective institutional goals and targets, motivating other to appreciate the value of good work, establishing an enthusiastic work culture, confidence, trust, and collaboration; and providing an understanding of the integrity within the organization.
3. Statement of present and future challenges Many clinicians such as dentist, nurses or doctors assumes the position as team heads, managers or leader in a health practice setting. Such me individual can be considered as clinical managers (Fulop et al., 2010). Dentist in particular assume this position by virtue of the organization leaders either reluctantly or willfully (Fulop, 2012) but the issues lies in the lack of such a training and expectation to run a profitable business and lead the team (Taichman et al., 2012). This is something I have experienced in in my first job as soon as I graduated from dental school. Imagine, slogging of as it is in managing patient reports and practicing effective patient treatments without any negative repercussions, with no expertise supervision, along with studying everything from year 1 for your final year, only to be thrown at a situation where you not only have to do everything as mentioned above but also find a way to generate resounding profit to be able to face your business partners or organization directors. Yes, I am sure that dropped quite a few sweats. Apologies to the dental students who are in this seminar, I say all this in good faith to shed a light on the issues which have been a dark journey for many. This norm regarding providing dental care to patients and maintaining a profitable business is expected to various degrees (Kippist & Fitzgerald, 2009).
