Formulating a clinical question related to a problem or issue in practice is a key step to engaging in evidence-based practice, which informs nurses’ clinical decision making. A structured question using a mnemonic such as PICOT or PEO, will facilitate a focused and systematic search for the highest level of evidence and best quality, relative to the practice issue/problem. Understanding this step in evidence-based practice is crucial to informing students/ clinicians professional practice.
Task Description/ Instructions
Briefly summarise, drawing on your experiences and relevant evidence, a clinical problem or issue from your chosen area of practice.
Formulate a structured clinical question using either the PICOT or PEO mnemonic. Outline each element of the question.
Define elements of the question, as appropriate.
Develop and outline a systematic search strategy, identifying key search terms (including key words and subject headings) from two electronic databases.
Note: subject headings may be different for each database. These must be specified for each database.
Tables can be used in an appendix and are not included in the word count.
ESSENTIAL– 1. Introduces topic clearly to the reader and summarises the clinical problem concisely, critically reflecting on any actual or potential implications to clinical practice. Summary is clear, and errors are rare and non-distracting.
2. Formulates a clinical question using, as appropriate, elements of the PICO(T) or PEO mnemonic that is relevant to the topic of inquiry. Outlines and defines elements of the question.
3. Provides a systematic search strategy that includes key words identified from the clinical question. Considers Thesaurus terms (eg MeSH & CINAHL headings) and applies relevant search limits. Rationalises databases to be searched and limits. Search strategy is clearly reproducible.
4. Consistently uses APA 7th style guide for in-text reference citations and formatting of reference list.
5. Completes all required aspects of written task to an exemplary standard, organised and sequenced appropriate (eg clear paragraphing; use of headings or sections where appropriate). The message is very clear, the reader finds the writing easy to follow, errors in expression rare and non-distracting.
