Case: Issues and Problems of Adolescence, including Bullying- Implications for learning and development.
Asher is 15 years old and he currently attends his local, public high school, having recently enrolled in Year 9. He is frequently tired in class, rubbing his eyes often and completes minimal work whilst listening to music and ‘rocking out’. He frequently attends class without the required books and resources.
Asher’s writing is rather large and contains multiple spelling mistakes, despite copying from the board (he will copy a maximum of a line or two of words) and they are carelessly written and not within the lines in his exercise book). He is placed in a mixed ability core class and most of the students in the class do not speak to him or interact with him. One of the few times Asher engaged with the course work was whilst watching Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream where he lifted his head from the desk and claimed ‘they must all be on drugs’.
Outside the classroom, Asher will spend time with a small core of students who are always very secretive (they stop talking when approached by a teacher and sit in an area furthest away from other students). Asher claims that he lives by himself, although the school is aware that he resides with his auntie; she has reported to the school executive that he has run away on several occasions and local police officers have returned him into her care.
On one occasion in your classroom, Asher’s phone rang. Despite the fact that you instructed him to turn the phone off and put it away, he answered the call and walked out of the classroom. One of the students in your class commented, ‘He’s on the phone to his drug dealer’.
Task Preparation
As preparation for writing your essay, you are required to post a 200 word summary reflection on ONE of the case studies by the end of Week 13. Your post will briefly outline at least two factors that you need to address in relation to supporting the learning and developmental needs of the student, reference to relevant theory from the course readings in relation to the key relevant factors for the case study; suggest at least one evidence-based teaching approach that could be implemented to support student. Your post should demonstrate evidence of preliminary reading and research via the course readings. You should list your reference sources with your post.
