A Plain Language Statement (PLS) or a Participant Information Statement (PIS) is the written information provided to people who are being asked to participate in a research project. Writing a PLS is another key skill in research and project work involving human participants. The purposes of writing a PLS for the assessment task are for you to demonstrate:
that you have a sound understanding of both your research design and the ethical implications and context of your research
that you can think about your research from the participants’ perspective, and thus explain it to them; and,
that you understand informed consent and can design a process to put it into practice.
This assignment has 2 (TWO) parts.
Part 1: The Plain Language Statement (approx. 1500 words)
The PLS must meet the requirements of the National Statement for provision of information to prospective research participants, and be written in clear, plain language understandable to prospective participants. Examples of style and format for Plain Language Statements will be provided during the classes. In addition, the Research Ethics unit website of most institutions provide models and tips for writing a PLS. Referencing is not expected within the PLS.
Part 2: Rationale for the PLS (approx. 1000 words)
For this part of the assignment:
Describe who the intended participants are and in what context they will receive the PLS (or verbal explanation), and then explain how you have taken account of these particular characteristics in designing the PLS.
Explain how your PLS enables valid informed consent, and in particular:
Note what information you decided to include and exclude, especially in relation to risks and benefits, and give a rationale for your decisions.
Explain how you balanced ethical principles of informed consent with the practical need to encourage people to read the PLS and agree to participate.
Reference in standard academic style where relevant.
If your proposed research involves only verbal provision of information (ie. no written PLS), write a script detailing what will be said. The basic structure and contents will be the same as for the PLS. If you write a script for verbal provision of information, your rationale should include an explanation of why information is being provided verbally rather than in writing.
